For the workshops during the expo and to explore the dyes I made 2 test collage works.

I'am the kind of person that is not so in to the instruction information on dyes, but you can see very well that the madder was ment for wool and lac-red for cotton.

I also mixed it with egg yellow (it worked).

And I test it on feathers too.

I realy wanted to try this cause the Aztecs used cochenille to dye feathers and I used clours from this continent too try how this works.

Gouda, stad van…Rood

Van 16 t/m 31 maart organiseren het streekarchief, de bibliotheek, de Firma van Drie een project over de kleur rood naar aanleiding van het kunst concept Het Rood Archief van kunstenares List van Dommelen.

In dit project gaan we met bewoners en bezoekers van Gouda op zoek naar de kleur rood in al haar facetten. Van de rode luiken van het stadhuis tot roodharigen, van het rode dorp tot rode bodemvondsten, van rood tennisbaan gravel tot rode volkswagenbussen. Komt u ook uw ‘rood’ brengen in de Jeruzalemkapel?

Kleur = cultureel erfgoed
Je zou het misschien niet meteen zeggen, maar kleur is cultureel erfgoed. Kleuren prikkelen de zintuigen, geven betekenis aan voorwerpen, brengen gedachten en gevoelens teweeg, halen herinneringen boven en kleuren onze omgeving. En geen kleur is zo veelzijdig en dynamisch als rood.

Archiveren met z’n allen
Het Rood Archief heeft tot doel archief te verzamelen. Zitten archieven normaal gesproken achter slot en grendel, in kasten en rekken vol bruine dozen; het Rood Archief is een open archief dat gedurende twee weken te bezoeken, bezichtigen en aan te vullen is.

Iedereen is welkom zijn eigen favoriete of bijzondere rood te komen toevoegen. Dat kan in de vorm van een verhaal, foto, herinnering of (foto van een) voorwerp. Het liefst op papier, zodat het streekarchief na de tentoonstelling het Goudse rood archief kan bewaren. Er liggen speciale registratiekaarten klaar om uw ‘rood’ mee te beschrijven en gastvrouwen en -heren staan voor u klaar om u te ontvangen.

Workshoppen 

Naast rond kijken, of rood inleveren kun je ook mee doen aan allerlei workshops. Er zijn o.a rode schilder concerten voor kinderen en volwassenen, rood dichten, en rode textiel en poezie workshops .

The expo from the red archive in Gouda 16 t/m 31 March is expanding.

And I can tell it is going to be a real red event with a lot extra activities

In my atelier in Delft The Netherlands I’am creating “The Red Archive” as I’m fascinated by the colour red. This collection started in August 2005 and will grow in the next couple of years with your help.

The archive contains all shades of red colours, personal files from other artists, and people all over the world. 

I also try to find out information on how these colours of red are made or used. 

Sending red shade samples was not enough, people started to bring red things and telling me what these items ment to them.

I was a bit overwhelmed by this approach, cause if the whole plan would develop as fast as it did in the beginning. The red archive cupboard I designed would not be big enough. My atelier would end up covered in red things. What is nice for a month but not forever.

But help came. In March 2013 the RED archive will have it’s first presentation in Gouda

You can participate by sending a red sample from a special colour red (size A4). It can be paint, ink, dyed textile, wool, or paper.

Write down, the name of the red shade, where it came from and how it was made, or which company makes this colour and what it means to you and of course your own name.

Achiote from Costa Rica

Before I started the Red Archive I spent some time in Costa Rica. I think the fact I was so much thinking about Red must have been visible. People started to tell me (out of the blue) about achiote and that it was used for making red.

The people I met in the forest their ancestors used achiote to paint on their skin. That gave the best red shade with achiote I have seen during that time. Of course from my hands it ended up on my tracking trousers so after 5 years I still have a kind of pale pink stain.

At home I did a little experiment to use it for printing. Mixing achiote with egg yellow gave the best result. This sample is more then 5 years old and it looks still fresh, and didn’t turn pale.
